However, have lost my voice.

I joked to [livejournal.com profile] bad_influence  - apparently am not allowed to walk & talk at the same time.

3. Title: Absolute Truths
Author: Susan Howatch
Series: Starbridge Series Book 6 of 6
Pages: 621
Date Finished: 1.II.2009
Thoughts: This was the last of the main starbridge series, but there's another trilogy set a bit lateer that I'm going to pick up when I next have some time. You have one spiritual director dealing with two delinquents (okay, conflicted priests) in this one. I think it helps emphasize some key characteristics of the Anglican priesthood that just seem contrary to the way my Roman raised brain works. It also slips in a lot of Anglican theology, which I find useful in my quest. Because this book falls chronologically before book 5, it's a bit odd in parts because you already know the future. But knowing the future doesn't spoil the book. Instead, you wonder just how things have changed and how the characters get to where they are later.

I've really enjoyed the series in general, but it's hard to pick a favorite. I can pick favorite characters in certain books, but since most of the characters recur in at least a minor role, you see different parts of them. Which just serves to illustrate the fact that everyone has problems and that the priesthood in general is not an easy path.

I look forward to her Wonder Worker series, but in the meantime, it's Cornelia Funke's Inkheart (sadly, in English until I get my hands on the original).

jagienka: (hh - lost cause)

There have been facebook status updates & tweets about this, but now that I've had a fairly concrete diagnosis, I think it's time for the full story.

Sunday I went ice skating with [livejournal.com profile] bad_influence, [livejournal.com profile] catling42, and [livejournal.com profile] skimtony at the rink in Somerville. Wiped out a few times - mostly due to unsharpened skates at the beginning. It's amazing what a difference sharpened skates make. Seriously. Had a blast though. I mean, I crashed on my left knee once kinda hard to the point where I couldn't put any weight on it, but sat out for a bit and then could put weight on it, so went back into the ring. (Lather, rinse, repeat). Yes, this happened more than once.

Went to mass and dinner as usual Sunday night. By that point, I realized that straightening my leg completely or bending it more than 90 degrees was causing lots of pain. [livejournal.com profile] catling42 and I went to urgent care (she's my hospital buddy, obviously) and they put me on crutches and told me I definitely did something to it - mostlikely tore something. Went back to see a member of my PCP team on Monday who told me to not put any weight on it at all, told me to be good about taking anti-inflammatory drugs on a schedule because that was necessary. Got the 'you're not as young as you used to be, take care of your body' talk. Got scheduled for an ortho appointment 'stat'. Went to see ortho today (a different one than previously, but I like this one much better) - who's name is Lars! - and was told that luckily my ACL appears to be intact. I have, however, torn my MCL. Good news is, it will heal itself on its own. My meniscus is too acutely damaged at the moment to tell whether there's any permament damage there. So, I'm on crutches for another week or two. Should keep off it completely until the swelling goes down & it looks normal again. Have appointments for PT in the meantime. See the ortho again in six weeks to re-evaluate the situation and see if it requires surgery or not.

Can I just say I'm not looking forward to a winter storm arriving tomorrow on the first day of classes while I'm on crutches? Yeah, not so much.

In good news, told my brother everything on the gender front and he didn't even miss a beat. I love him.

3. Title: Scandalous Risks
Author: Susan Howatch
Series: Starbridge Series Book 4 of 6
Pages: 469
Date Finished: 21.I.2009
Thoughts: This book has a distinctly different flavour from the previous three books. Told from the point of view of a female instead of a male, it's a lot 'messier' - and I'm not sure if that's because a female author is writing a female character or what. I don't know. It was an interesting change, but it didn't seem as spiritual heavy as the others - which was disappointing for me. And I missed the clear mentor/mentee | director/petulant directed dynamic.

4. Title: Mystical Paths
Author: Susan Howatch
Series: Starbridge Series Book 5 of 6
Pages: 502
Date Finished: 26.I.2009
Thoughts: This book takes place firmly with the seocnd generation, and seems more of a murder mystery than the spiritual crisis novel, but it does give us the chance to meet Lewis, who is absolutely phenomenal. I definitely loved the new characters, not sure how I feel about some of the paranormal things that were presented in this book. However, in this books, Howatch continues to prove just how gifted she is with the pen, and I have numerous pages dogeared for quotes to write down later. Novels that create quotes are always successes in my books.
