missing chicago

jagienka: (sweet home chicago)
I suppose it just proves I'm strange that I'm really missing Chicago during their blizzard right now. Chicago Public Schools are closed for the first time in 12 years. Even administrators (principals, vps, janitors, etc) have been told not to come in.

Update from my mom (who lives near O'Hare):

There are 4 foot drifts around the house, the stairs on both sides are snowed in. I am not sure how we will be able to dig out to the garage. The driveway has tall drifts than the snow plow can muster. The street is snowed in. Nothing is moving. They closed schools and told principals, assistant principals, engineers and lunchroom. I am unable to get out of the house. It is supposed to be snowing until 3 pm this afternoon. The city had plenty of warning, but some did not take it seriously. I think we all in Chicago forgot what a blizzard is. Babcia & Dziadzio called, they are snowed in, Tadek came last night and took the snow blower. Staszek called, they closed his factory for the day.

Actually, looking out the window, it is a white out at this moment, I cannot see the garage.

At least my mom has power even though she's a ComEd customer.

Here we don't have anything yet but some ice on the road. Most of the Harvard schools are closed. Seems everyone saw the midwest and panicked, even though the storm is fizzling.

Ah well.
jagienka: (winter fun)

-Changed my flight to Sunday because of the storm yesterday - today in Chicago which is headed for boston

-Classes ended on Tuesday. In Harvard fashion, finals are after Christmas (although this is the last such year). So, I have a bunch of work due Jan 9, 12, & 15. I'm actually going to get a head start on a bunch of it if possible, because really, allnighters for papers suck.

-I actually am starting to feel like I might be beginning to be trained for ministry through *gasp* parts of meaning making and then the all-day workshop I attended on psychological triage in disaster response that was part of my internship. I think I want to take more counselling classes. Perhaps Gabe was right and this is something I'd be good at.

-my twitter feed has stopped. not sure why. not sure how to fix it/how much i care.

-i'll be in chicago dec 21-30 if people want to get together. I know [livejournal.com profile] logodaedaly and [livejournal.com profile] die_sterne are going to be around. And I have tentative plans for either the 27 or 28th with [livejournal.com profile] rhipowered. Anybody else?

-Harvard Divinity School closed today because of the impending snow storm. Cambridge & Somerville declared snow emergencies. Me? I'm sitting here waiting for snow.

jagienka: (rainy days)
So, an update on things in chicago:

Roads yesterday had between 6inches and 3 feet of standing water. [livejournal.com profile] mrtomtom had water up to the door of his Rav4 as he tried to get to my parents house. (He did in fact, make it). Gettin home from the airport was a feat. I still can't believe how much standing water there was INSIDE O'Hare airport. *shakes head* and on the taxiways. crazy.

We have a lake in our backyard that is creeping up the backsteps and has already flowed into the basement.

And the best news - the remnants/backlash of Ike are supposed to hit today.

So, yeah, I'm hoping I can fly back to Boston tonight. *crosses fingers*

At least O'Hare is open today and not at a ground halt.

Now time for post-wedding brunch. :)
