Booklog 2008: 12-14 of 50
Saturday, 8 March 2008 10:2112. Title: The Life of Saint Macrina
Author: Gregory of Nyssa
Pages: 70
Date Finished: 20.II.2008
Thoughts: Not much to say about this. It was interesting, but Gregory puts Macrina on such a pedestal that it just makes the book hard to read.
13. Title: Future of an Illusion
Author: Sigmund Freud
Pages: 71
Date Finished: 25.II.2008
Thoughts: This was my second time reading this, but strangely enough, I almost enjoyed it this time. (Which is kinda scary - to find myself agreeing with Freud at times on his view of religion). But it is a useful book, though it felt weird to read it without Civilization and its Discontents because the two go together in my head.
14. Title: Song of the Magdalene
Author: Donna Jo Napoli
Pages: 240
Date Finished: 7.III.2008
THoughts: I started this book awhile ago and it didn't hold me, but on last night's train right to Providence, I just sat down with it and it worked.
The premise is good - the backstory of Mary Magdalene, but it's a Young Adult book & I feel it tries too hard to make it accessible and tries to oversimplify complicated issues like sex and the issue of epilepsy & physical disability in the biblical world. Not sure if I'd recommend it, but it wasn't bad.
